This paper discusses a participatory informal learning event in which we attempted to integrate concrete experiences with learners’ scientific understanding using models they construct. We describe a pilot study of working with school astronomy club students at a local junior college in Singapore at an informal setting using a modeling approach for astronomy learning. In this study, diverse ways of motivating students to experience and understand astronomical concepts have been emerged. In particular, we focus on the effect of modeling on junior college students’ understanding of what they observe in the night sky.
