Abstract

“Social networking”, “learning communities”, “collaboration”, “interactivity” – these terms and paradigms are becoming the cornerstone of effective and engaging online courses. Yet it is still perplexing as to how to actually design, incorporate, and facilitate these social networking and learner centered activities into online courses. This presentation will feature applied examples, case studies, and specific guidelines for incorporating and blending different learning activities and social networking tools such as blogs, twitter, social bookmarking, and voice threads for a highly interactive learning experience. Research has clearly shown that students who are actively engaged in the learning process are more successful, both in a face-to face or online course. There are certainly many challenges to developing effective and engaging online courses. One of the greatest challenges is how to keep the online learner actively engaged and part of an online learning community.
