Enhancing Online Courses with Web 2.0 Technology

Teaching online presents a myriad of challenges. Today’s students are used to being involved in their world. The correspondence classes of old are much too boring a concept to keep them engaged in the learning process. Whether it is adding visual interest, interactivity, or even a virtual existence in cyberspace, professors need to at least consider adding some type of technology in their online courses. According to Hartnett (2008), “The opportunity is vast for creative and innovative educators.” Web 2.0 utilizes the Web as a platform to facilitate collective intelligence, contribution, and collaboration (O’Reilly, 2005). In this roundtable we will be looking at blogs, wikis, and 3-D virtual worlds as collaboration tools and discuss how to incorporate these tools into an online learning experience.
