Does Your Institution Need a 'Second Life'?

This paper is an examination of the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating activities in online virtual worlds into distance learning for any institution. The analysis focuses on one of the more popular virtual worlds, Second Life. Engagement in 3-D virtual world of Second Life, and similar virtual worlds, presents compelling new venues that can bring to the distance learner a greater sense of connectedness to the institution and to their classmates. For the educator, it also can bring the ability to model certain concepts in a 3-D environment that will give the student a greater understanding of complex relationships. As the widespread growth in popularity of participating in these virtual worlds increases, it is likely that many more distance learners will be familiar and engaged in such environments. It therefore becomes incumbent on forward thinking institutions to be familiar with the capabilities and advantages of such virtual worlds.
