Abstract

The roles of tutor are changing according to learners’ needs and learning context. Tutors are facing challenges in designing innovative pedagogical approaches to promote higher order thinking such as critical thinking. Online discussion is an effective tool for facilitating critical thinking. In online discussion, the roles of tutor have a significant effect on learners' cognitive growth and knowledge acquisition. In this study, identified were the 5 domains and 120 roles of tutors based on literature review. By cross checking method, three critical domains and 28 roles in online discussion were extracted and validated by three experts regarding online tutors' roles for facilitating critical thinking. Another experts verified by using a 5 point Likert scale with respect to explicability, usability, validity, comprehensibility, and generality about three domains and 28 critical roles. As a result, it was finally identified that there are three important domains such as cognitive, meta-cognitive, and managerial domain as well as roles for enhancing critical thinking.
