This study applied a computer system, Value Focused Association Map (VFAM) presenting the students’ essays, to understand students’ learning outcomes. Although there were many ways of presenting learning outcomes, the map provided an alternative of presenting learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to help students focus on learning from the association map which integrates students’ concepts in their essays into the value hierarchical map which can present students’ deeper layers of concepts. Students focused and reflected on their thoughts with these maps. The significance of the study was two fold. One was the designation of a visualized text data system. The other one was helping students learn materials from the VFAM. Thirty two students attended an instructional design course in Teacher Education Program and used VFAM stimulating and reflecting their learning in group discussion. The results indicated that the VFAM would help students reflect their learning.
