Abstract

Supporting cohorts of preservice teachers from four institutes of higher education is a daunting task. This presentation discusses a program to create a community of practice based on mentor/protégé pairs and supported by technology tools such as email and a community-wide portal. Beginning Educators Gain Instructional Nurturance (Project BEGIN) is a U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Enhancement Recruitment grant dedicated to preparing preservice teachers to work in high-need schools. Project BEGIN allows project collaborators to utilize technology to support e-mentoring and discussion among the larger community of practice, as well as, the creation of multimedia modules to enrich the conversation between mentor and protégé. These support structures create unique support systems to better prepare teachers with the necessary skills and commitment to work in high-need schools.
