WaveHero: An educational game for K-12 Students

Educational video game designers are faced with many challenges. Today, most commercial video game systems are capable of handling high-performance interactive 3D graphics. Such advances increase competition between educational game developers and corporate gaming giants. STEAM is a GK-12 project funded by NSF. Wave Hero uses STEAMiE, a game engine developed under this project. Wave Hero is an interactive 3D video game based on the popular Guitar Herotm game that teaches students about propagation of energy through a medium in the form of a wave. This paper discusses how Wave Hero meets many of the common challenges faced by educational game developers. Furthermore, it introduces the concept of the educational game paradigm and how it relates to the development of this project. Additionally, it discusses specific design goals aimed towards maximizing the success of Wave Hero as an educational tool such as interactivity (hands-on learning), familiarity, incentives, reduction in aliasing, flexibility, re-playability, and portability.
