Measuring preservice teacher self-efficacy of technology integration

The technology integration teacher education courses at Brigham Young University are designed to instill the knowledge and skills described in the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). Pre- and post-course surveys revealed that preservice teachers' attitudes were not improving at the same rate as their knowledge and skills. After analyzing the survey data, the Technology Integration Confidence Scale (TICS) was developed to measure preservice teacher self-efficacy regarding tasks described in the NETS-T. An analysis of pilot test data showed initially acceptable levels of reliability, unidimensionality, and validity, but also identified several items in need of revision. A second version of the TICS is now being tested with the Fall 2006 cohort, and further revisions will be posted online, free of copyright restrictions. The TICS is part of a larger movement to make rigorously developed measures available to technology integration researchers.
