Geotrekking: Connecting Education to the Real World

Geotrekking expands upon the educational potential of geocaching by using this enjoyable physical and mental activity to support student mastery of specific curricular objectives and/or to engage students in meaningful problem based learning (PBL) challenges. Geotrekking provides students with hands-on collaborative learning opportunities, encourages and supports the integration of content areas, and supports a constructivist approach to learning. The nature and potentials of three types of geotreks are described (portable, fixed-location and online), and the outlines of several exemplar geotreks are provided. Geotreks can be created for primary, secondary or tertiary levels to support students as they master, integrate and consolidate concepts and relationships associated with their curricular learning objectives. Geotreks are used in teacher education to support pre-service teachers as they discover, clarify and internalize the nature of learning and effective educational practice.
