Abstract

In the current teaching of the Japanese language in Japan to students from countries that do not use kanji (Chinese characters) in the native language, learning kanji is a heavy burden on them. Considering this, we developed teaching materials for a kanji learning system that employs a kanji character form recognition method. We have installed these teaching materials in an e-learning system and recorded its use conditions among students from overseas where no kanji are used in the native language. We also conducted a questionnaire survey on all the students using this e-learning system to study kanji, and based on the results, we interviewed some of those who very frequently or less frequently used this system. This paper describes the results of the questionnaire survey and interviews.
