Abstract

Current CMSs have limited capabilities of supporting instructional design for online delivery. They are criticized for lacking proper pedagogical affordances and having limited content management capabilities. In this paper, the authors review related literature within and beyond the field of educational technology to capture valuable information for improving the technology. The review focuses on two important aspects for supporting instructional design: 1) Automated instructional design (AID); and 2) Collaborative/cooperative design in general. The purpose is to explore what potential support for instructional design could be integrated in CMSs.
