In this paper an innovative platform to manage e-learning activities, virtual courses, seminars and related multimedia databases is discussed. JNetlesson and JNetSeminar, advanced Video Content Management System (VCMS), are presented. The systems, Java Technology based, have been developed in the ENEA Usability Lab, Casaccia Research Center, in collaboration with the University of Rome "La Sapienza". The systems, called Multimedia Educational System (MES), allow the end-user to access different multimedia e-learning content of virtual courses produced exclusively through both video streaming and queries to relational and distributed databases. MES by means of JNetlesson and JNetSeminar, finalised both to manage e-learning activities and the online study, provides advanced communication between docent/student, online lessons and seminars. An overview of how the system works and of the complex system architecture is given. Then the experimental usability results, using these technologies and specific cooperative tools in e-Learning experiences, and the final comments are discussed.
