Teacher Home Access as a Primary Indicator of Stage of Adoption of Technology

The authors previously reported finding extensive differences in teacher attitudes and skills as well as student perceptions of technology, based on whether or not information technology users had access to a computer at home (Knezek & Christensen, 2002). Analysis of spring 2002 data re-affirms these trends and provides further evidence that home access to information technology is a very strong indicator of whether or not a teacher advances to higher stages of adoption of technology and whether there is increased use for instructional activities. Teachers who reported no access to a computer at home measured significantly lower on many of the use and skill indices. This affirmation implies that educational decision makers should make every possible effort to secure home access to computers for their teachers as an integral part of their educational professional development regarding technology integration.
