Abstract

In this presentation we will introduce varied projects designed to bring computer science, broadly construed, into the repertoire of K-8 teachers, girls, and young women. These include teacher education in Computational Thinking and Coding; teacher education in Gender Equitable Teaching Strategies for faculty who work with young women in career and technical education, STEM, or counseling for post secondary pathways; an after-school program for girls aged 10-14; and, a dynamic connected learning model utilizing informal and formal learning opportunities to maximize outcomes from efforts to increase teacher and learner capacity in these areas. The focal point will be on hypothesis around best practices for empowering girls and women with basic understanding of computational thinking and coding based on early findings.
