Design and Development of an Interactive, Collaborative, Online Course --- A Constructivist Approach

More and more universities have begun using the Web to deliver courses to internal and external students. However, very often, instructors in online courses have been trying to replace traditional courses without making any changes to the method of delivery, teaching approach, course materials, or mode of assessment. In these instances the Web is only used as a delivery medium instead of a potential teaching and learning tool, and students become passive receivers of knowledge rather than active learners. To address this problem, we designed and developed an online course using a constructivist approach, in which the Web is used to support active learning, interactivity, and collaborative knowledge construction. This paper will discuss the context and motivation, related literature, and the design and development of an Interactive, Collaborative Online course
