Abstract

While e-learning systems have generally been associated with distance learning, they can also be applied in the traditional learning environment of an academic institution. In this case the e-learning system creates, implicitly or explicitly, a plurality of virtual learning communities that constitute a virtual extension of the real communities existing within a course. This approach requires that issues stemming from the coordination of activities typifying this type of virtual community be considered alongside the standard use of electronic communication technologies. This paper examines these problems, starting from experiences gained in the planning, development and application of the Learning Management System which has been in use for four years in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Trento. A more detailed treatment is given to the problem of managing chrono-referenced data in systems characterized by a plurality of events.
