Abstract

Abstract: The increased use of the World Wide Web in parts of the world has seen it impact upon the lives of some in quite significant ways. Given the high use of this tool in informal learning situations it is my belief that we must develop our understanding of how the Web may impact upon learning and the learners of the future. Further, given the complexity of learning and the unique nature of the Web-based environment I contend that we must conduct research in this area which allows this complexity and uniqueness to emerge. I consider this can be done if we approach research using an integrated theoretical approach which incorporates elements of Situated Cognition, Distributed Cognition and Activity Theory. This integrated theoretical approach forms the basis of this paper.
