Abstract
The article deals with the educational uses of virtual learning environments (VLE), with a particular focus on ENVI –a VLE used in teaching health and welfare – and the theoretical per-spectives for analysing teachers’ pedagogical, subject matter and technical expertise in that envi-ronment. The research also presents results based on data collected from interviews with teachers (N=8) in February 2008. This material was gathered in order to address the research question: What kinds of concepts of learning, theoretical perspectives, pedagogical models and methods, and educational tools are teachers using? The findings reveal that the teachers did not adopt any particular concept of learning and pedagogical models and methods were applied unconsciously and inconsistently. The research indicates that work experience plays a significant role in the development of technical expertise, for it helped the teachers familiarise themselves with health and welfare technology.
