Abstract
This paper presents the findings of a study conducted on a graduate-level online MBA program. This study investigated the effects of group structure and task complexity as key variables which are considered to influence students' performance. The results of this study indicated that different types of group structures and levels of task complexity did not influence short-term performance. However, there was an impact of these variables on performance in the long-term performance in online environments. On the contrary, a significant interaction effect of group structure and task complexity appeared at the initial round, but later its effect disappeared over time being. With consideration of the wide application of groupwork activities in an online environment, this study implies that educational practitioners should consider how they will structure and manage online groups and their activities in order to ensure the quality of group process and performance.
