Abstract
It has been more than a decade since electronic journals were first suggested as a possible means of revolutionizing traditional print. In education, the availability of teaching ideas in a refereed electronic format presents an innovation in the way that the ideas are communicated to the community of students and their teachers alike. The offering of this Roundtable is prompted by the authors' joint work on setting up an electronic journal Spreadsheets in Education, http://www.sie.bond.edu.au. The authors argue that a paradigm shift in using spreadsheets as a pedagogical tool through electronic media has occurred due to the fact that while the intrinsic interactivity of spreadsheets is lost in traditional print format, the alternative format tremendously facilitates a transition from action to interpretation, reflection, and further action on the part of the learner. Through a number of illustrations it is suggested that one's knowledge of the software from a tool kit perspective becomes a crucial factor in promoting its uses across disciplines.
