Abstract
For the past three years, the UALR Mathematics Department has investigated technology available for use in mathematics classes. We found Maple TA to be a valuable tool for online learning and assessment. MapleTA is appropriate for use in science, engineering and mathematics classes. It has the capability both to present mathematical expressions to students and to check mathematical expressions entered by students for correctness. Student responses to questions can be in several formats, including mathematical expressions, numbers, or selections of a region on an image. This paper includes a description of MapleTA and how the question bank and assignment editors are used to create quizzes, proctored exams and practice sessions. We will illustrate how these editors are used to implement assessment tools and learning sessions, how to provide feedback to students and how to collect data. This paper is based on our experience using MapleTA in both online and traditional classes.
