Abstract
This paper describes the experiences of the Retro project that aimed to convert the learning material in an existing online course to a set of reusable learning objects. It provides a detailed exposition of how the IMS Content Packaging Specification and the IEEE Learning Object Metadata Standard were used to create learning objects that could interoperate with other learning content management systems. It also discusses the problems that were encountered during the conversion process and suggests ways in which these problems can be tackled. Finally, the paper highlights research directions that are likely to simplify the process of creating reusable learning objects for online courses.
