Abstract
When university departments acquire, store, and share research datasets,IT support often finds itself struggling to reconcile several critical issues.Who pays for research datasets? Where are they stored? Who has access to them? How are they shared? How are they organized? What are the IT hardware and software requirements? Who supports the technology? Who makes dataset decisions, who provides funding, and who enforces the rules? In this paper, we will examine the technical, financial, administrative, and political issues that surround research datasets and propose policies and procedures that aim to accomplish two important goals:(1)save limited resources and (2)improve intradepartmental communication, academic research and dataset collaboration. We will outline the process, explain how our experience can be used to enrich essential research activities, improve collaboration, decrease replication of efforts, and reduce the costs of data acquisition and storage at other universities.
